Farm Manager

The Goat Conspiracy Sanctuary (a former dairy farm “transfarmed” into a farmed animal sanctuary in Bloomington Indiana, whose residents include 115 goats and 70 chickens) is seeking a dedicated farm manager with a passion for animals to oversee animal and farm care at the Sanctuary. The farm manager will ensure all needs of the residents are well taken care of (including feedings, medical, shelter). The person in this position will be responsible for the training of those assisting with resident care.

This is a five-day-per-week position including weekends. The specific workdays will be determined by the Executive Director based on the needs of the Sanctuary.

Live on-site preferred. Employee housing is available for rent.

Qualifications:

  • A background working with large animals is strongly preferred.

  • A collaborative leadership style that motivates and supports your team.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Proven ability to multi-task, prioritize, and organize.

  • A commitment to ethical animal care, biosecurity, and safety standards.

  • This position is physically demanding and requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. and work outside in all weather and includes being on call for emergencies.

Responsibilities:

1) Resident Care

  1. Address daily needs (providing morning feedings, watering, supplements), as well as special and individual needs

  2. Manage hoof care and vaccination schedule

  3. Address other medical needs, either on site or with vet visits as required

  4. Address residents' emotional needs - make sure stress is minimized, monitor herd dynamics, etc

  5. Manage sourcing, purchase, delivery and storage of supplies, including hay, grain, straw, medical supplies, supplements etc. that are needed for resident care

2) Farm Care

  1. Maintain cleanliness of barn and coops

  2. Maintain pastures, including fencing (repair and maintenance) and rotating herds.

  3. Manage sourcing of equipment and supplies that are needed for maintenance of property and structures and consult with Executive Director to ensure purchases are in alignment with budget and cash flow

3) Team-building

  1. Train resident care staff, volunteers, and interns

  2. Foster an environment that contributes to high retention of volunteers, interns and staff

4) Communication

  1. Communicate and give regular updates on healthcare, necessary repairs and improvements, etc. with ED

  2. Record keeping: maintain medical records, check lists, spending lists, inventory etc. and have readily available to share with Director and Board

5) Activities with Goats

  1. Work with ED to make sure residents are ready for events (e.g. goat yoga)

6) Other: General farm maintenance and other tasks as needed or directed by the Executive Director.

Farm manager will report to Executive Director and collaborate with Executive Director on activities scheduled at the farm and to make sure that the needs of the residents are considered first and foremost.

Employment details:

  • Compensation: $50k per year

  • 25 days of paid time off, all-inclusive PTO (vacation, sick days, personal days, holidays)

  • Expected time commitment is approximately 40 hours per week. The Farm Manager is expected to be on call for farm emergencies and available for special events as needed.
